When artificial intelligence arrived in schools and universities for good, many institutions reacted by picking a side: allow everything or ban everything. I understand the impulse, but I think both answers skip the most important part of the conversation.

The right question

Instead of asking whether AI can be used, I prefer to ask what for. For those who learn, AI can be a patient tutor that explains things again as many times as needed. It can also be a shortcut that hands over the answer and takes away the process of thinking. The tool is the same. What changes is the agreement around it.

Inclusion is the most promising point

In my research on AI and inclusive education, what strikes me most is the potential to adapt content to different paces and needs. Text read aloud, summaries in plain language, examples made to measure. For many students, this opens doors that used to be closed.

But inclusion only happens with intention. Without guidance from those who teach, technology tends to widen the gap between those who already know how to use it and those who do not.

What every institution needs to agree on

  • Which activities welcome AI and which ones it undermines.
  • How students should disclose their use of the tool.
  • Who takes care of learners' data.
  • How to train teachers to use it safely.

A human perspective, to me, means this: remembering that technology serves those who learn and those who teach. Never the other way around.
